How you can help

1.By becoming a gatehouse, an initial contact point & intake facilitator for prospective students.

Gatehouse is a term we use to decribe a partnership that a local church or organisation and Teen Challenge have formed in an effort to be more effective in reaching out to people with life controlling problems
in this partnership the church or organisation becomes a doorway for people to enter into the rehabilitation program, and once they have completed the program, they can be releases back through the church into the community.
Teen challenge believes that working together with church and other organisations is crucial to reaching the community instead of being a separate entity.

2.By being willing to open your house for a weekend to a student, so that he might begin to create helpful contact with the wider community.

He would shave on a stranger’s front lawn, because he didn’t have a bathroom to use.  He slept under the bridge in Brunswick as it was too late to find accommodation.  He lay down at the railway station for a rest after two and a half days without sleep.  He waited 15 hours for admittance into a psych ward, because he thought that was his best option for somewhere to stay.  He kept returning to old drug buddies for a roof over his head, and ended up using heroin again.

It is especially difficult for the men in the program who have no support structures in their lives.  Where do they go on pass weekends?  Many of them have nowhere.  The difference between someone relapsing back into their addiction, or living a clean and sober life is support.

Pass weekends are an important part of our program.  It is a way to gently ease the guys back into the community, and to slowly build and implement relapse prevention strategies that help them say no to their drug of choice.  For one weekend a month, they have the opportunity to put into practice some of the skills they are learning whilst in the program.  They simply cannot do it on their own.  We have been designed for relationship and to do life together.

Your support to these men could seriously help make the difference between someone making it or relapsing.  How?  Why not consider opening your home for the last weekend of each month for one of our men to stay at?  Help them become a loved and accepted part of your church community and family.  Write to them.  These acts of generosity will change a life.  It will also be establishing an important support structure for them for when they have completed the program.

If this is a way you can offer support, contact us for an interview.
